This is a mining lamp gauze (outer) for a Protector lamp or davy lamp which fits Type 6,GR6S, 6RS and SL lamps.
These are used gauzes and are not for mining use.
Gauzes are made from 28’s mesh woven wire cloth, this mesh is the principle safety feature of miners lamps established by Sir Humphrey Davy. It allows the lamp flame to burn gas and oxygen within the lamp but the gauze dissipates the heat so that methane or fire damp around the lamp does not explode.
