Protector Lamp Type A1

protector A1 lamp

Made fro the 1890’s this is based on our early miners lamps but was sold as a house lamp or car lamp. It was hung on a car radiator over night in winter to stop the water freezing before the advent of anti freeze

  1. Hello, I wonder how we can lit this lamps, no igniter of any kind, and impossible to lit by opening the bonnet because of the safety rod nor by unscrewing the reservoir , the flame goes out when introduced into the cage…mystery lamp. Thanks

    1. Hi the A1 burns paraffin and it is lit outside the lamp. As you unscrew the vessel the patented protector self extinguisher remains in the lamp and as the burning wick passes through it the burning wick is snuffed out. The extinguisher is a brass disc with a hole in the centre. Once the vessel is removed you can then remove the extinguisher and screw it back onto the vessel. If necessary replace the trimming wick fill with paraffin, light the wick then screw the vessel back into the lamp. Videos on wick replacement are on our youtube channel; https://www.youtube.com/c/ProtectorLamp
