The GR6S Garforth Mining Lamp
Flame safety lamps from Protector Lamp. The Garforth GR6S mining lamp was prototyped in the early 1960’s and began to replace the Type 6 Deputies Lamp from the late 1960’s.
It is essentially a modified Type 6 with a gas intake port on the glass plate allowing the direct injection of gas samples into the flame. This gives a more accurate reading for methane/firedamp detection.
All pit lamps have a magnetic lock, they are still used in UK coal mines for gas testing today. Your lamp comes with an opening magnet, spare wick and is fuelled ready to light.
Protector started making miners lamps in 1873 in Worsley, they moved to Eccles in 1890 as production expanded.
